Twenty-One

Garrett

Pretending we were peeved about losing the auction to Davin, which wasn’t actually untrue, Saskia, Finch, Ryann, and I moved to a more secluded part of the garden while the auction carried on.

“I’ve got an idea.” Finch looked at us, vibrating with nervous excitement.

“Hiding in the pick-up room until he comes to collect?” It’d come to me the moment the auctioneer had mentioned the goods needed to be collected.

Finch smiled. “Great minds, my man. Great minds.”

The last time I’d seen Davin Doncaster, he’d put a Necromancy-laced blade in my back… and I’d died. That wasn’t something I could forgive, considering the ripple effects. If Davin hadn’t killed me, Alton wouldn’t have sacrificed himself to bring me back. And tonight, I was going to get some of that long-awaited revenge. Not just for me, but for everyone he’d hurt along the way.

Saskia tapped her foot impatiently. “The question is, where do we go and how do we get you both in there without being seen? If Davin senses something is wrong, he’ll run a mile.”

“It’s weird seeing him here, acting like everything is fine,” Ryann said quietly, like she wasn’t quite with us. “I kept thinking someone would do something, or someone would call the security magicals, but they seem glad that he’s here. I don’t get it. They have to know who he is, right?”

“Oh, they know,” Finch grumbled.

I nodded. “Yeah, they know, all right. He’s their sort of person. Of course they won’t turn him in to the authorities. That’s why we’re doing it for them—bringing some morality to the party.”

“They look after their own.” Saskia looked confused. Perhaps this party and these people had lost some of their shine for her, too. She’d seen a glimpse behind the pretty front, and I got the feeling she didn’t quite like what she’d seen.

Finch turned to Ryann. “We need your help if we’re going to get that Trap.”

“My help?” She raised a surprised eyebrow.

He moved closer to her. For a second, I thought he was going to hold her hand, but he didn’t. “I’ll tell you more when I can, but for now you have to trust us. This is serious. If we don’t leave here with the Ivan Trap, then I’m in trouble. You remember what I said to you before?”

She nodded slowly. What did he say to you before?

“Everyone under that umbrella might be in trouble, too.” He held her gaze, and she seemed to understand, even if I didn’t. “I need you to tell me where the Trap is being kept. That’s where we’ll hide and wait for Davin. Where do they put the auction items after they’ve been sold?”

She frowned. “Is anyone going to be hurt if I tell you?”

“No,” he replied. “The only person you’ll be harming is Davin, and he deserves it. You know that better than anyone. Think about what he did to your family. Think about what he did to you. You’ve got every right to help us take what he bought, after all of that, and you’ve got every right to have some payback of your own.
